What Is a Fractional CMO? (And When a Brisbane Business Needs One)

A fractional CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) is a senior marketing executive who leads your marketing strategy, budget and team on a part-time or contract basis, usually one to three days a week. You get C-suite marketing leadership and accountability for results, without the cost of a full-time executive.

Here’s a scenario I see all the time. A business owner has done everything right. The website is live, the socials are ticking along, and there’s a marketing coordinator (or an agency, or a nephew who’s handy with Canva) producing content every week. Yet the leads are patchy, nobody can say which activity is paying for itself, and every marketing decision still lands on the owner’s desk at 9pm.

The missing piece is rarely effort. It’s senior leadership: someone who sets the direction, decides where the budget goes, and holds the work to account. That’s the gap a fractional CMO fills.

I’ve spent 20+ years in marketing leadership and have been working as a Fractional CMO and marketing strategy partner for Brisbane businesses since 2018. Here’s my plain-English guide to what the role involves, what it costs in Australia, and how to tell if your business is ready for one.

What Does a Fractional CMO Do?

A fractional CMO owns your marketing direction and results, the same way a full-time CMO would, just for fewer days. In practice, that covers:

  • Marketing strategy and planning: setting the direction, priorities and marketing plans that connect directly to your commercial goals.
  • Brand positioning and messaging: making sure your market understands who you serve, what you solve and why you’re different.
  • Budget allocation: deciding where your marketing dollars go, and where they stop going.
  • Team and agency leadership: briefing, guiding and mentoring your in-house team, coordinator or agency partners.
  • Implementation oversight: keeping the plan on track, on time and on budget.
  • Measurement and reporting: tracking what’s working and reporting to your leadership team in commercial terms, rather than vanity metrics.

The part most business owners underestimate is the last two. Plenty of businesses have a marketing plan. Far fewer have someone senior making sure it gets executed consistently, month after month. In my experience, that’s where growth is won or lost.

Andrew Rooke, Managing Director of Packaged IT, describes it well: “Kristy developed our strategy, then stayed alongside me to implement it, working through our priorities and pivots, and keeping me accountable every step of the way.”

How many days does a fractional CMO work?

Most fractional CMO engagements run one to three days a week, or a set number of days each month, on a 6 to 12 month contract. Strategy work tends to front-load the hours in the first few months, then it settles into a steady rhythm of oversight, reporting and course correction.

How Much Does a Fractional CMO Cost in Australia?

In Australia, a fractional CMO typically charges between $1,200 and $2,500 a day. Depending on how many days you commit, that usually works out to between $5,000 and $16,000 a month. A full-time CMO, by comparison, carries a base salary of around $215,000 to $235,000, or roughly $270,000 to $320,000 a year once super and on-costs are included.

Published benchmarks sit within that range. Cemoh, the Brisbane-based fractional marketing network, reports an average fractional CMO day rate of around $1,276, while Fractionus puts the Australian average closer to $1,900 a day.

What moves the price for your business:

  • Days committed: half a day a week costs very differently to two days a week.
  • Scope: strategy only, or strategy plus implementation oversight.
  • Team leadership: whether your fractional CMO is leading staff, agencies or both.
  • Engagement length: longer engagements usually allow for more predictable monthly pricing.

A smarter model for many small businesses

Here’s something most fractional CMO pages won’t tell you: plenty of small and medium businesses don’t need a full day a week of CMO time. What they need is someone to do the work, and someone senior to steer it.

For many of my clients, the most cost-effective model is a part-time or contract marketing coordinator handling day-to-day execution, with my senior oversight, optimisation and advisory sitting above them. At Hunter Marketing Co., that oversight and accountability starts from $1,500 + GST a month (the coordinator is costed separately). It includes a weekly check-in with your coordinator, a monthly performance meeting with your leadership team, and support in between. You get senior direction and accountability at a price point that makes sense for a growing business.

Fractional CMO vs Marketing Agency vs Full-Time CMO

Each option solves a different problem. Here’s how they compare:

These options work well together. Some of the strongest setups I see pair a fractional CMO with an agency: the CMO sets the strategy and holds the agency accountable, and the agency executes.

Three Signs Your Business Is Ready for a Fractional CMO

Every business is different, but in my client work the same three signs come up again and again. Here’s what they look like in real Brisbane businesses.

1. Your team is busy, but nobody senior is setting the direction

TPS Instruments is a Brisbane manufacturer of water measurement instruments with its own in-house marketing team. The team had the skills to execute. What they needed was senior direction: sharper product messaging for a rugged, trade-focused audience, clear KPIs so each team member knew what good looked like, and a regular rhythm of accountability.

That’s fractional CMO work in a nutshell: making a capable team more effective, rather than replacing it. If your coordinator or junior team is waiting on you to make every call, or working hard on activity that isn’t tied to your commercial goals, you need leadership more than you need more hands.

2. You’re launching something and can’t afford to get it wrong

When DC House launched its Fast-Track Granny Flat Range, the stakes were high: a new product, a considered purchase for buyers, and a major industry event in the Tiny Homes Expo to build around. The work started with strategy: positioning and naming the range, defining two clear customer personas, and building a three-month campaign plan anchored to the Expo, with a launch Open Day to bring buyers in person.

Launches, rebrands and expansion into new markets are moments where a wrong call costs months. Senior marketing leadership at that point protects the investment you’re about to make.

3. You’re spending on marketing, but can’t tell what’s paying off

Part of the DC House engagement was framing campaign performance in commercial terms the leadership team could act on. On the most affordable unit in the range, the Meta campaigns delivered a 34x return on ad spend. That’s the difference between reporting likes and reporting revenue.

If your marketing reports are full of reach and engagement, but nobody can confidently answer “what did we get for that money?”, a fractional CMO brings the measurement discipline to fix it.

When You Don’t Need a Fractional CMO (Yet)

Not every business is ready for a fractional CMO, and that’s okay. If you’re a solopreneur or micro business without the budget for ongoing senior support, or your foundations (clear positioning, a defined target audience and a written marketing plan) aren’t in place yet, start there.

My 1:1 Marketing Plan in a Day is built for exactly this stage. You walk away with a clear, practical marketing plan you can implement yourself, and you can bring in fractional support when you’re ready to scale. If you’d like fresh brand photos to bring that plan to life, Marketing Plan in a Day & Brand Photos returns in February 2027.

Fractional CMO FAQs

Is a Fractional CMO the same as a Fractional Marketing Officer?

Largely, yes. Some businesses use Fractional Marketing Officer or Fractional Marketing Director for the same part-time senior role, particularly when a C-suite title doesn’t suit the size of the organisation. The title matters less than the scope: strategy, leadership and accountability for results.

How long does a fractional CMO engagement last?

Most run 6 to 12 months. A strategy takes time to build and implement properly, and marketing results compound with consistency, so very short engagements rarely show their full value.

Can a fractional CMO work with my existing team or agency?

Yes, and that’s often where the most value sits. A fractional CMO gives your existing team or agency senior direction, clear priorities and someone to report to, while building your in-house capability through mentoring.

Do I need to be based in Brisbane?

No. As Brisbane-based marketing strategy consultants, we work with businesses Australia-wide, in person and online.
