Your Customers Are Searching Differently. Do You Have the Right Marketing Strategy in Place?

AI is rapidly changing the marketing landscape. This isn't new news, but as marketing strategy specialists, it's our job to inform our community that the way your customers search, research and make decisions about business has shifted significantly.

Google is increasingly using AI in search, while people are also turning to tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini to research questions, compare options and discover businesses.

For business owners and CEOs, this can feel like a lot to keep up with. You might be wondering whether you need to change your website, create more content, optimise for AI search, or start using AI more heavily across your marketing.

Our advice is simple: don’t panic, and don’t start doing more marketing just because AI is changing. Start with the strategy.

AI Is Changing Search. Your Marketing Strategy Still Matters.

The way people discover businesses is changing. Search is becoming more conversational, and AI tools can now provide answers, summaries and recommendations rather than simply returning a list of links. That means your business needs to be clear, consistent and credible wherever people find you.

However, being visible in AI search is not a marketing strategy. If your positioning is unclear, your messaging is generic, your website does not clearly communicate what you do, or your content does not demonstrate your expertise or how you’re different, AI is not going to solve those problems for you.

The fundamentals of good marketing are critical. With more businesses using AI to produce content and communicate online, having a clear and distinctive brand is becoming even more important.

Your Strategy Needs to Be Right for Your Business

There is no universal AI marketing strategy. A Brisbane professional services business with a six-month sales cycle does not need the same marketing strategy as a manufacturer, SaaS business or health provider.

Your marketing strategy needs to reflect your business goals, your customers, your competitive environment, your resources and what makes your business worth choosing. This is why we will always recommend doing the strategic thinking and analysis before jumping into AI tools, content creation or automation.

Strategy comes first and technology supports it. That distinction matters: AI can help you execute a strategy, but it cannot decide what the right strategy is for your particular business.

AI Does Not Know What Makes Your Business Genuinely Different

This is one of the biggest areas where we see businesses missing an opportunity. Most business owners know they are good at what they do. They know their customers value them and they know there are reasons people choose them over their competitors. The challenge is often articulating those reasons clearly.

Your genuine differentiator might be your depth of expertise, your process, your responsiveness, your customer experience, your relationships, or the particular problem you solve exceptionally well. These are valuable insights that come from understanding your market, talking to customers, looking at the competition, and applying experienced strategic thinking.

AI does not magically uncover these things for you. This is where experienced marketing strategy makes a difference. Once you know what makes your business distinctive, AI can be an incredibly useful tool for helping you communicate those ideas consistently and efficiently.

AI Can Make Your Marketing Better. It Can Also Make It Boring.

We use AI at Hunter Marketing Co. every day. We recommend it to our clients because, when used well, it can save time, improve efficiency and help marketing teams get more done.

We also see the other side. AI makes it incredibly easy to produce polished content that sounds like everyone else. The language can become bland. The imagery can feel artificial. The messaging can lose personality. Suddenly your marketing looks professional but tells your customers very little about what makes you different.

We are pushing our clients in the opposite direction. We recommend less polish and more personality. Use your own voice. Share your experience. Have a point of view. Show the people behind the business. Talk about the problems you solve and the results you create.

Your customers do not need another perfectly polished piece of generic content. They need a reason to trust you.

There Are Some Things We Will Always Recommend You Do Yourself

AI is a powerful marketing tool, but there are some things we will always recommend keeping firmly in human hands.

Check What AI Produces

AI can sound incredibly confident while getting something wrong. We recommend checking facts, statistics, claims, names, Australian terminology and anything that could affect your reputation or credibility.

We also recommend reading the content properly before you publish it. Does it sound like you? Is it useful? Is it accurate? Does it say something worth saying? AI is confident, but that does not mean it is correct.

Do Not Rely on AI for 100% of Your Content

AI can help you create content more efficiently, but your marketing should still contain your expertise, experiences, opinions, stories and customer insights: the human stuff.

Your best content will often come from something that happened with a customer, a lesson you have learned, an opinion you hold, or a problem you know how to solve. AI can help you turn that thinking into content. It should not replace the thinking. Remember, you are the expert.

Do Not Replace Real People With AI-Generated Imagery

We will always recommend using real photography where it helps build trust and show the human side of your business. Your team, your workplace, your customers, your products and the people behind your business all help potential customers understand who they are dealing with.

AI-generated imagery has its place, but we do not recommend using it simply because it is faster or cheaper than showing the real thing. Your brand should feel like a real business, because it is one.

Our Focus Is Always Human First, AI Second

This is the approach we use with our clients. We start with the human thinking: your goals, customers, positioning, brand, differentiation, expertise and commercial priorities. Then we look at where AI can genuinely help.

That might be research, brainstorming, analysis, content development, repurposing, efficiency, or supporting your marketing team. The technology is incredibly useful when it has a clear strategy and strong information to work with.

The opportunity is not to use more AI. The opportunity is to use AI better. Our clients are leaning on us more than ever to help them make those decisions, and we are seeing great results from businesses that have taken the time to get the strategy right before adding more AI into their marketing.

So, What Should You Do Now?

You do not need to overhaul your entire marketing strategy because AI is changing. Start by asking yourself:

  • Is our positioning clear?
  • Can our ideal customers see why they should choose us?
  • Are our genuine differentiators coming through in our marketing?
  • Does our content sound like our business?
  • Are we demonstrating real expertise and experience?
  • Are we using AI to make our marketing better, or simply making more of it?

If those things are not clear, that is where we would recommend starting.

AI is creating enormous opportunities for businesses that use it thoughtfully. The businesses that benefit most will not necessarily be the ones using the most AI. They will be the businesses with a clear strategy, strong positioning, genuine expertise and a brand that people can connect with. Get those things right first, and AI can help you do more with them.

If your marketing has become reactive, you are unsure what to prioritise, or you are trying to work out where AI fits into your marketing, it may be time to step back and look at the bigger picture.
